What is BMI?

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a screening number calculated from your height and weight. It was developed by Belgian statistician Adolphe Quetelet in the 1830s and adopted by the WHO as a population-level health screening tool in the 1970s.

Metric: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m) Example: 65 kg ÷ (1.65)² = 65 ÷ 2.7225 = 23.9 Imperial: BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height² (in) Example: 703 × 143 ÷ (65)² = 100,529 ÷ 4,225 = 23.8

The formula is identical for men and women. What differs is interpretation — men naturally carry less body fat than women at any given BMI due to lower essential fat requirements and higher muscle mass on average.

BMI for men — what’s different?

Men naturally carry less body fat than women at any given BMI due to lower essential fat requirements. A man at BMI 23 typically has 13–18% body fat. Muscular men can have BMI values in the "overweight" range with very healthy body composition.

BMITypical Body Fat — MenTypical Body Fat — Women
2010–15%24–28%
2313–18%27–32%
2515–20%30–35%
3022–27%37–42%
Why less fat? Men require only 2–5% essential body fat (vs 10–13% for women). Men store less fat hormonally and have higher muscle mass on average, meaning they reach overweight or obese classifications at lower visible body fat levels than women at the same BMI.

Healthy BMI for men by age

The WHO defines a healthy BMI as 18.5–24.9 for adults of all ages. Research suggests optimal ranges shift slightly with age:

AgeUnderweightHealthyOverweightObese
18–34< 18.518.5–24.925–29.930+
35–54< 18.518.5–24.925–29.930+
55–64< 2020–26.927–31.932+
65+< 2222–27.928–32.933+
Men over 65: Research shows BMI 23–27 is associated with better outcomes in older men. Some extra weight provides metabolic reserves. However, abdominal obesity remains a significant risk factor — waist circumference under 102 cm (40 in) is the key target for older men.

Muscular men: A strength-training man may have BMI 28–30 (technically “overweight” or “obese”) with only 12–15% body fat — excellent health. Elite athletes like rugby players or bodybuilders frequently exceed BMI 30 with minimal fat. For active men, body fat % and waist circumference are more meaningful.

BMI Prime & Ponderal Index explained

BMI Prime

BMI Prime = BMI ÷ 25. It expresses your BMI as a ratio to the upper healthy limit:

  • Below 0.74 = underweight
  • 0.74–1.00 = healthy weight (target zone)
  • Above 1.00 = overweight or obese

Example: BMI 22 → Prime = 22/25 = 0.88 — you are at 88% of the healthy upper limit.

Ponderal Index

Ponderal Index = weight (kg) ÷ height³ (m). Theoretically more accurate than BMI for very tall or short people because it uses the cube rather than square of height. A healthy Ponderal Index for men is approximately 11–14 kg/m³.

Limitations of BMI for men

  • Ignores muscle: Athletic men are most frequently misclassified by BMI. A muscular man with 12% body fat can easily hit BMI 27–29, yet have excellent cardiovascular health.
  • Ignores fat distribution: Waist circumference under 80 cm (31.5 in) is a stronger metabolic risk predictor for men.
  • High muscle mass: Men who lift weights regularly are most likely to be misclassified as overweight by BMI. A man with 15% body fat and significant muscle can easily have BMI 27–30.
  • Age-related fat gain: Men naturally lose testosterone from ~30 onwards, shifting body composition toward more fat and less muscle. BMI may stay the same while health risk increases.
  • Ethnicity: Asian men have higher body fat at the same BMI; a lower overweight threshold (BMI 23) is often recommended for South and East Asian men.
  • Age: Testosterone decline from age 30+ shifts body composition. The same BMI at 60 implies significantly more fat than at 30. Waist circumference matters more with age.
Better metrics for men: Waist circumference (< 94 cm / 37 in for men), waist-to-height ratio (< 0.5), body fat percentage (DEXA), and visceral fat measurement together give a far more complete picture than BMI alone.

FAQs

The WHO healthy range is 18.5–24.9 for adult men. Older men (65+) may be healthiest at BMI 23–27, as some extra weight provides metabolic reserves. Asian men are advised to aim for 18.5–22.9 due to higher body fat at any given BMI compared to white men. Muscular men may be healthy above 25. Always discuss your personal target with a GP.
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m). Imperial: BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height² (in). The formula is the same for women and men. However, women carry 8–13% more body fat at any BMI due to reproductive biology, so interpretation differs from men.
BMI 25–29.9 is overweight and BMI 30+ is obese (WHO thresholds, same for men and women). However, muscular women may sit at BMI 26–27 with healthy body fat. Waist circumference under 80 cm (31.5 in) is a complementary metric for women.
BMI Prime = BMI ÷ 25. It expresses your BMI as a fraction of the healthy upper limit (BMI 25). A value below 1.0 means healthy weight. Exactly 1.0 means BMI 25. Above 1.0 means overweight or obese. Example: BMI 23 gives Prime 0.92 — you are 92% of the way to the top of the healthy range.
The BMI formula doesn’t change, but interpretation does. Men naturally lose testosterone from their 30s onward, which reduces muscle mass and increases abdominal fat. This means the same BMI at 50 carries higher health risk than at 25. Waist circumference under 94 cm (37 in) becomes increasingly important as men age.
