What is FFMI?
FFMI (Fat-Free Mass Index) is a measurement of how much lean muscle mass you carry relative to your height. It's similar to BMI, but instead of using total body weight, it uses only your fat-free mass (lean body mass) — removing fat from the equation entirely.
This makes FFMI a far more useful metric for anyone who lifts weights. A 200 lb athlete at 10% body fat and a 200 lb sedentary person at 30% body fat have identical BMIs (if the same height), but their FFMIs will be dramatically different.
FFMI was developed by Kouri, Pope, Katz, and Oliva in their landmark 1995 study in the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine, which analyzed 157 male athletes to distinguish natural lifters from steroid users.

The natural FFMI limit of 25
The claim that FFMI 25 is the natural limit comes from the Kouri et al. 1995 study, which found that none of the 74 verified natural athletes exceeded a normalized FFMI of 25.0. They also analyzed pre-steroid era Mr. Universe winners (1939–1959) — the best natural physiques ever built — and found a maximum FFMI of 25.4.
Subsequent research has refined this:
- A 2000 study in the European Journal of Applied Physiology confirmed FFMI 25 as the ceiling for 98% of natural men.
- A 2023 meta-analysis in Sports Medicine found the median peak FFMI for natural competitors was 22.8 (men) and 20.2 (women).
- FFMI values of 26+ are 98.5% correlated with steroid use in competitive athletes.

FFMI vs BMI — why FFMI is better for athletes
BMI (Body Mass Index) divides total weight by height squared. It makes no distinction between fat and muscle, which creates absurd classifications for trained individuals:

How to improve your FFMI
FFMI increases when lean mass increases or body fat percentage decreases (or both). The only sustainable way to raise FFMI is building more muscle:
- Progressive overload — consistently increase weight, reps, or sets over time. No progressive overload = no growth signal.
- Compound movements — squat, deadlift, bench press, overhead press, row, pull-up. These recruit the most muscle mass per exercise.
- Protein intake — 1.6–2.2g per kg of body weight (0.7–1g per lb). Protein is the raw material for muscle repair and growth.
- Caloric surplus — a modest surplus of 200–400 kcal/day when focused on muscle gain. Larger surpluses mostly add fat, not muscle.
- Sleep — 7–9 hours. Growth hormone is primarily released during deep sleep. Sleep debt directly impairs muscle protein synthesis.
- Consistency over years — natural muscle gain is slow: 1–2 kg/month for beginners, 0.5–1 kg/month intermediate, 0.2–0.5 kg/month advanced.
