What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person’s height and weight. It serves as a widely used screening tool to identify whether someone is underweight, a healthy weight, overweight, or obese. While it was originally developed for population-level research, it is now routinely used by healthcare providers as a quick initial assessment.
BMI Formula
The calculation differs slightly depending on which unit system you use:
Imperial: BMI = 703 × weight (lbs) ÷ height² (inches)
For example, a woman who is 165 cm tall and weighs 60 kg has a BMI of: 60 ÷ (1.65 × 1.65) = 22.0 — squarely in the Normal range.
BMI for Women: What’s Different?
The standard WHO BMI thresholds (18.5–25 for normal) apply to both men and women. However, research shows that women naturally carry a higher percentage of body fat than men at the same BMI. This means that a woman with a BMI of 23 may have a different body composition than a man with the same BMI.
Women also experience significant body changes during pregnancy and menopause, which can affect weight and fat distribution. BMI should therefore be interpreted alongside other measurements such as waist circumference, body fat percentage, and overall health history.
BMI and Age
As women age, muscle mass typically decreases and body fat increases — even if weight remains stable. This means older women may have a “normal” BMI but carry proportionally more fat. The calculator above factors in age to help you understand your reading in context.
Healthy Weight Range for Women
The healthy BMI range of 18.5–25 translates to different weights depending on height. Below is a reference table for common heights:
| Height | Healthy Weight Range |
|---|---|
| 150 cm (4′11″) | 41.6 – 56.3 kg (91.7 – 124.1 lbs) |
| 155 cm (5′1″) | 44.4 – 60.1 kg (97.9 – 132.5 lbs) |
| 160 cm (5′3″) | 47.4 – 64.0 kg (104.5 – 141.1 lbs) |
| 165 cm (5′5″) | 50.4 – 68.1 kg (111.1 – 150.1 lbs) |
| 170 cm (5′7″) | 53.5 – 72.3 kg (117.9 – 159.4 lbs) |
| 175 cm (5′9″) | 56.7 – 76.6 kg (125.0 – 168.9 lbs) |
| 180 cm (5′11″) | 59.9 – 81.0 kg (132.1 – 178.6 lbs) |
BMI Prime
BMI Prime is your BMI divided by 25 (the upper boundary of “normal”). A value of exactly 1.0 means your BMI equals 25. Values below 1.0 indicate a healthy or below-normal BMI; above 1.0 indicates overweight or obese. It’s a quick way to see how far you are from the normal ceiling.
Ponderal Index
The Ponderal Index (PI) is an alternative to BMI that uses the cube of height instead of the square, making it more reliable for very tall or very short individuals.
Normal range: approximately 11–14 kg/m³
Limitations of BMI for Women
- Doesn’t measure body fat directly. Two women with the same BMI can have very different body compositions.
- Muscle mass is ignored. Athletic women may be classified as “overweight” even with low body fat.
- Pregnancy changes everything. BMI is not a useful measure during or shortly after pregnancy.
- Ethnicity matters. Some guidelines recommend lower BMI thresholds for Asian women (normal up to ~23 instead of 25).
- Age affects interpretation. Post-menopausal women often carry more fat at the same weight.
Risks of Being Overweight (BMI > 25)
- Type 2 diabetes
- High blood pressure and cardiovascular disease
- Certain cancers (breast, endometrial, ovarian)
- Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
- Sleep apnea
- Joint pain and osteoarthritis
Risks of Being Underweight (BMI < 18.5)
- Hormonal imbalances disrupting the menstrual cycle
- Higher risk of miscarriage
- Osteoporosis and bone fractures
- Nutrient deficiencies and anaemia
- Reduced immune function
