Type two names and see a love percentage and the FLAMES result. Both update as you type. The scores are for fun. They come from the letters in the names and say nothing real about the two people.

How to Use This Calculator
Love percentage. Type your name in the first box and the other person's name in the second. The score appears straight away and changes with every letter you type.
FLAMES. Use the second calculator the same way. It shows which letter of FLAMES is left after the elimination, along with the meaning of that letter.
Spelling counts. Both calculators work on the exact letters you type. Rahul and Rahool give different results, and so do full names and nicknames, so use the spelling you want counted.
How the Love Percentage Is Calculated
The calculator keeps only the letters in each name, in lowercase. Spaces, numbers and symbols are ignored. The two names are then put in alphabetical order, so Rahul and Priya gives the same score as Priya and Rahul.
That combined text is run through a fixed formula that produces a number, and the number is scaled to a score between 40 and 99. The same two names always give the same score. Nothing in the formula measures real compatibility, so the score is best used as a game.
How to Play FLAMES by Hand
- Write both names on paper, for example RAHUL and PRIYA.
- Cross out each letter that appears in both names, once per match. R and A are in both names, so one R and one A come off each name.
- Count the letters that are left. Two letters came off each name, leaving H, U, L, P, I and Y, which is 6 letters.
- Write the word FLAMES and count 6 letters from the F, crossing out the letter you land on. Start again from the next letter and keep counting 6, skipping letters that are already crossed out.
- Stop when one letter is left. Here the letters go out in the order S, F, A, L, E, which leaves M.
- Read the meaning: F is Friends, L is Love, A is Affection, M is Marriage, E is Enemies and S is Siblings. Rahul and Priya get M, which is Marriage.
Common Uses
- A quick game with friends or classmates.
- An icebreaker at parties and get-togethers.
- A result to share in social media posts and stories.
- A classroom example of counting out, where a simple rule gives a surprising answer.
A Short History of FLAMES
FLAMES is a pen-and-paper game that has been passed around school notebooks in India and other parts of South Asia for a long time. Nobody knows who first wrote it down, and the rules are almost the same wherever it is played.
The elimination step, counting around a ring and removing every nth item until one is left, is a well-known maths puzzle called the Josephus problem. Online love calculators add a percentage to the same idea.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the love calculator accurate?
No. It is a game. The score is produced from the letters in the names and does not measure how two people feel or how well they get along.
Does the order of the names matter?
No. The two names are sorted before the score is worked out, so the percentage is the same in either order. FLAMES also gives the same result in either order.
Why does a nickname give a different result?
Both calculators work on the exact letters you type. A different spelling, a nickname or an added surname changes the letters, so the result changes too.
Can I use names in Hindi or other languages?
Yes. Letters in any script work. FLAMES needs matching letters to cancel out, so write both names in the same script.
Is my data saved?
The names you type stay in your browser. This calculator does not send them to a server or store them.
What are the highest and lowest scores?
Scores run from 40% to 99%.
