What is strike rate in cricket?

In cricket, "strike rate" refers to two completely different statistics — one for batters and one for bowlers. Both measure efficiency, but in opposite directions.

  • Batting Strike Rate — runs per 100 balls faced. Higher = better. Measures how quickly a batter scores.
  • Bowling Strike Rate — balls bowled per wicket taken. Lower = better. Measures how quickly a bowler takes wickets.
Why strike rate matters more than raw scores: A batter scoring 50 runs off 30 balls (SR 166) is often more valuable in T20 cricket than one scoring 70 runs off 80 balls (SR 87.5). Similarly, a bowler taking a wicket every 15 balls is far more threatening than one who takes a wicket every 50 balls, even if the latter has a better economy rate.

Batting strike rate explained

Formula: Batting SR = (Runs Scored ÷ Balls Faced) × 100 Example — Virat Kohli, IPL innings: 82 runs off 53 balls SR = (82 ÷ 53) × 100 = 154.72 Interpretation: At this rate, Kohli would score 154.72 runs in any 100-ball spell — an aggressive T20 innings. Key rule: Wides and no-balls do NOT count as legal deliveries faced. They add to the batting team's score but not the batter's ball count. Only legitimate deliveries count.

Boundary percentage and dot ball percentage are equally important context metrics. A batter hitting boundaries on 40% of their balls can maintain a high strike rate even with dot balls in between, while a batter who relies on singles and doubles needs to face fewer dots.

Bowling strike rate explained

Formula: Bowling SR = Total Balls Bowled ÷ Wickets Taken Example — Jasprit Bumrah, Test series: 144 balls (24 overs) bowled, 6 wickets taken SR = 144 ÷ 6 = 24.0 Interpretation: Bumrah takes a wicket every 24 balls — world-class. Converting overs to balls: 1 over = 6 balls 10.3 overs = (10 × 6) + 3 = 63 balls
Bowling SR vs Economy Rate: These measure different things. Bowling SR = wicket-taking ability. Economy Rate = run-control. A bowler can have excellent economy (e.g. 4.0 rpo) but poor bowling SR (taking a wicket every 60 balls) — useful for blocking but not match-winning. The best Test bowlers combine low SR (frequent wickets) with good economy.

Required strike rate in a run chase

Required Strike Rate (RSR) tells the batting team how fast they need to score to win from their current position in a run chase.

Formula: Required SR = (Runs Needed ÷ Balls Remaining) × 100 Runs Needed = Target − Current Score Example: Target: 185 | Current: 42/2 after 10 overs Overs remaining: 10 (60 balls) Runs needed: 185 − 42 = 143 Required SR = (143 ÷ 60) × 100 = 238.3 This is an extremely difficult chase — essentially impossible at T20 level as it requires a six off every ball. Also useful: Required Run Rate (RRR) = Runs Needed ÷ Overs Remaining In the example: 143 ÷ 10 = 14.3 runs per over
Rule of thumb: A Required SR below 100 = easy chase. SR 100–130 = manageable in T20. SR 130–160 = hard but achievable. SR 160–200 = very difficult, needs boundaries every ball. SR above 200 = virtually impossible except in extraordinary circumstances.

Strike rate vs batting average — what's the difference?

These two statistics measure completely different things about a batter:

Format context: In Test cricket, batting average is king — a 50+ average is elite. In T20, strike rate dominates — a batter with SR 160 and average 25 is often more valuable than one with average 40 but SR 110. IPL auction prices correlate far more strongly with strike rate than batting average.

Batting Strike Rate = (Runs Scored ÷ Balls Faced) × 100. Only legal deliveries count — wides and no-balls are not included in the batter's ball count. A SR of 150 means the batter scores 150 runs per 100 balls on average, or 1.5 runs per ball.
Bowling Strike Rate = Total Balls Bowled ÷ Wickets Taken. 1 over = 6 balls. A bowling SR of 24 means the bowler takes a wicket every 24 balls on average. Lower is better — elite Test bowlers like Dale Steyn (career SR 42.3) and Waqar Younis (career SR 43.5) are among the best ever.
In T20 cricket, above 130 is good, above 150 is excellent, and above 175 is elite. The modern T20 era has pushed benchmarks higher — Suryakumar Yadav (career T20I SR ~185) and Jos Buttler (~145) represent the new standards. In IPL, a middle-order batter with SR below 120 is considered slow for the format.
Required Strike Rate = (Runs Needed ÷ Balls Remaining) × 100. If you need 80 runs from 60 balls, your required SR is (80 ÷ 60) × 100 = 133.3. As wickets fall or boundaries become fewer, required SR climbs. Anything above 180 makes a chase nearly impossible in normal conditions.
Economy rate = runs conceded per over (measures run control). Bowling strike rate = balls per wicket (measures wicket-taking ability). A spinner may have excellent economy (5.0 rpo) but mediocre bowling SR (one wicket every 50 balls). A fast bowler may take wickets frequently (SR 30) but concede at 6.0 rpo. Both metrics together give the complete picture of a bowler's impact.
No. Wides and no-balls are not counted as legal deliveries faced for the purpose of calculating batting strike rate. If a bowler bowls a wide, the team gets an extra run but it does not add to the batter's ball count or affect their personal strike rate. Only legitimate deliveries (balls that the batter can play) count.
